APF. KAFE

Pop-up Store of APF. KAFE in UABB 2017
Shenzhen, China

Runner-up of the A’ Design Award

This is the redesigned visual system for APF.KAFE's pop-up store, participating in the BI-CITY BIENNALE OF URBANISMARCHITECTURE. In order to better integrate into the exhibition's theme, "Urban Symbiosis," we decided to incorporate "three-dimensional Grid" elements into this system update. This not only retains the basic shapes but also combines visual effects to display "Mosaic" – a mosaic art form using small stones, shells, ceramic tiles, glass, and other colorful inserts as materials. The distinctive packaging aligns with the extremely high-density populated environment of the exhibition location – "Urban Village" in Nantou, Shenzhen. The independent grid shares similarities with the inclusiveness displayed by the narrow and limited "Urban Village."

Simultaneously, it aligns with the lifestyle concept and social pattern that APF.KAFE aims to establish. A complete and independent system, a diverse and individual "Urban Village," this redesign fully integrates the conservation and development program of public space reconstruction and boundary remodelling.

this project sits at the intersection of branding, spatial design, and cultural placemaking. The identity system draws on Cantonese vernacular architecture — specifically the green-and-white mosaic tiles found on old Guangdong shopfronts — reinterpreted through a modular, three-dimensional grid language.

This pop-up branding project reflects iDDC.'s broader design philosophy: using graphic and spatial systems to translate complex urban and cultural narratives — in this case, the density, adaptability, and community fabric of Shenzhen's "urban villages" (城中村) — into a coherent commercial and architectural identity. The work was recognised as a Runner-up at the A' Design Award, and exhibited as part of the 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (UABB), one of the most significant platforms for architecture and urbanism discourse in the Asia-Pacific region.
