For Hongkongers, the cha chaan teng is more than a place to eat. It is where the city starts its morning, catches its breath at lunch and lingers over afternoon tea. In collaboration with G.O.D. (Goods of Desire), Hong Kong's quintessential heritage design and lifestyle brand founded in 1996, iDDC created a print collection that captures this everyday institution and turns it into objects for everyday life.
Design Concept
G.O.D., a play on 住好啲 ("to live better" in Cantonese), has spent decades transforming ordinary Hong Kong subjects into extraordinary objects. Our brief was to do the same for the cha chaan teng. Rather than illustrate a single café, we compiled a visual archive of the cha chaan teng — the signs, tiles, menus and dishes that every Hongkonger recognises instantly, layered together as they crowd a real street corner. The collection pays tribute to 街角舊影,不散人情: old street-corner scenes, and the human warmth that never fades.
Design Language
Signage as Typography
Hand-painted shop signs drive the composition: 茶餐廳, 冰室, 港飲港食 and 經典推介 "Classic Recommendation". Their bold, calligraphic characters carry the voice of old Hong Kong signwriting into a contemporary layout.
The Emblem
At the centre sits an ornate chain-framed medallion reading 香港 · 掂, Cantonese slang for "all good". It acts as the collection's crest — confident, playful and unmistakably local.
Tiles and Neon
Diamond mosaic tiles echo classic café walls, while marquee light bulbs and sunburst rays recall the neon signs of Hong Kong nights.
Iconic Comfort Food
Egg tarts, silky milk tea, pineapple buns, French toast, instant noodles with luncheon meat and fried egg, macaroni soup and baked pork chop are rendered in rich, painterly detail — the unofficial menu of Hong Kong.
Heritage Palette, Modern Finish
Cha chaan teng green, signage red and cream are set against a soft iridescent background, like neon reflected on a glass tabletop — nostalgia seen through a contemporary lens.
The Collection
Cha Chaan Teng Apron — 85 x 57 cm, polyester with cotton lining, adjustable strap and two deep pockets
Cha Chaan Teng Tea Towel — 70 x 50 cm, absorbent linen cotton
Cha Chaan Teng Coaster — 10 cm water-absorbent ceramic with non-slip cork back
Old and New at the Same Time
The collection reflects a belief shared by both studios: cultural heritage stays alive when it is part of daily life. Worn in the kitchen, hung by the sink or set under a cup of milk tea, each piece carries a small part of Hong Kong into homes around the world.
