McKinnon House

Residential Architecture Design 2025
Melbourne, Australia

Located within the established residential neighbourhood of McKinnon, Melbourne, this residence is conceived as a contemporary urban retreat, balancing architectural expression, privacy and natural light.

The façade is defined by a bold composition of black and white volumes, creating a clean and sculptural identity. A large white frame wraps around the upper-level screen, while vertical dark fins provide solar shading and filter views from the street. This allows the interior to remain bright and connected to the outdoors without compromising privacy.

The darker ground-level base visually anchors the building and creates a strong relationship between the residence, boundary walls, entry gate and metal detailing. Recessed openings, layered surfaces and vertical elements introduce depth and changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day, softening the overall scale of the building.

The restrained palette of white, charcoal and grey responds to the evolving architectural character of McKinnon, allowing the residence to feel distinctly contemporary while remaining respectful of its suburban context.
